How to build formatted docs and update CVS ========================================== Formatted docs are not build by default as building them takes a considerable amount of time. In the tree we therefore ship an ACII formatted version of the docs in xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/doc which should be updated whenever the SGML source changes. This document describes the steps to take. Before updating the formatted docs please make sure you have the doctools installed (see wiki.x.org on where you can find these tools). You need to enable building the formatted docs in your host.def with: #define BuildAllDocs YES #define HasSgmlFmt YES Once you have modified the SGML sources in the xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/doc/sgml directory do the following steps: 1. Commit the SGML source. 2. If you are using an lndir'ed buid tree and you have created a new file, create an empty version of the ASCII file in xfree86/doc and rerun lndir in your build tree. 3. If you have previously built the tree without building the docs you have to rebuild the Makefiles in the xfree86/doc directory so that the two Imake defines above take effect. In xfree86/doc do: make Makefile make Makefiles Now you can rebuild the formatted docs in the build tree with make update.docs in the xfree86/doc/sgml directory. This will also copy the new files into the source tree (you must have write permission to the source tree for this to work). 4. If you have changed any entry defined in xfree86/doc/sgml/defs.ent file you may want to force the rebuild of all formatted docs with: make update.docs FORCEUPDATE=yes 5. Now you can commit the formatted docs. If you have created new files don't forget to do a 'cvs add' for the formatted version also. For some versions of the doctools to work properly you may have to set the LANG environment variable to iso88591.
